* Cynthia Ning is Associate Director of the University of Hawaii’s Center for Chinese Studies, and Hawaii director of its Confucius Institute. She is the author of many texts for teaching Mandarin, including the media-based series ENCOUNTERS: CHINESE LANGUAGE & CULTURE (Books 1, 2, 3 and 4), jointly published by Yale University Press and Sinolingua, as well as COMMUNICATING IN CHINESE and EXPLORING IN CHINESE, both published by Yale University Press. She is currently working on story books to encourage reading in Chinese.
