Dear CLTA-TEXAS members and friends.

CLTA-TEXAS is pleased to announce a February workshop. This workshop will be conducted as a webinar (online) and also on-site at the Language Commons at the University of Houston.  On-site participants will be limited to the first 30 paid registrants. Online participants will be asked to download “Zoom” software, and participate in a brief “tech check” on February 22 to ensure you are able to connect. For remote users, you will have to use the Windows version of Powerpoint for the digital storytelling portion; but if you are using a Mac, you should still be able to follow along.

Attendees who complete the training will be awarded a professional development certificate. To obtain the certificate, attendees will need to submit a sample of Digital Storytelling, and a short Quizlet speech after the Workshop (by March 9).

Presentations:

1) “Digital Storytelling.” Presented by Jim Kumakata, Director, Language Commons, University of Houston.

Software: Microsoft Powerpoint (Windows)

Description: The communicative approach to language teaching, which emphasizes attention to the message rather than merely to form, has been used for the last decade with positive results regarding
linguistic fluency…. (Harley & Swain, 1984) One of the effective ways to develop and showcase the communicative skill is storytelling. Telling a story with images can be a fun learning experience for the students. Participants will learn how to create a Powerpoint story and convert it into video. At the
end of the presentation, participants will have their own video to watch and share. We will explore this approach using the classic story “The Three Little Pigs.”

2) “Using Quizlet to Make text to voice Student Speeches.” Presented by Marshall McArthur (麥查理). Instructional Assistant Professor, Chinese Studies, University of Houston.

Most students and teachers are familiar with Quizlet for studying vocabulary, but not aware that Quizlet has dependable and accurate Chinese text to voice capability. Quizlet flashcards support sentence and short paragraph length writing, allowing Quizlet to “read” a text speech that can be used by a student for individual practice. This presentation will require each participant to write a short speech, and prepare the speech for delivery through Quizlet.
